EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 3, 2007--International
Rectifier, IR(R)(NYSE:IRF), a world leader in power management
technology, today announced the company's SmartRectifier(TM) IC has
won an EDN Innovation of the Year Award.
Winning in the Power IC category, the IR1167 SmartRectifier IC
simplifies secondary-side synchronous rectification (SR) for AC-DC
power converters and improves power density for high-power flyback and
resonant half-bridge converters, enabling smaller, cooler designs for
laptops, mini-PCs, LCD and PDP digital televisions, game systems and
other digital computing and home entertainment systems.
The IR1167 implements a simple, highly efficient method of
secondary-side synchronous rectification (SR). The IC is independent
of the primary-side controller. It uses IR's proprietary HVIC
technology for directly sensing and controlling secondary-side
rectification. The IC can control a wide array of standard- or
logic-level, 30-200V power MOSFETs. In addition to controlling
high-power flyback secondary sections, the SmartRectifier is the first
commercial IC for resonant half-bridge converters. Compared to
discrete current-transformer-based designs, the IR1167 increases
power-subsystem efficiency by at least 1% while reducing board area,
component count, and system cost.
Winners of the 17th Annual EDN Innovation Awards were announced
April 2 at an awards ceremony in San Jose, CA. EDN, the premier
electronics design magazine, is part of Reed Electronics Group, the
electronics industry's largest global information provider. For more
